    How To Enable GodMode On Windows 7

    by SQLDenis on Jan 03, 2010 in categories Ethics & IT

    Did you know that Windows 7 has a GodMode? What GodMode does is enable you to have a place where you can get to all the settings without having to browse around and click through options and folders in control panel.

    Add a new folder to your desktop and name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
    After that is done you will see the following icon on your desktop

    Now when you click on that icon you it will open up the following folder...isn't that cool?

    By the way there is much more in this folder than in the screenshot, in the screenshot you only see 4 sections, in the folder there are 46 different ones

    Warning...although GodMode works on Vista 32 bit and 32 bit Windows Server 2008 it does not work on Vista 64 bit sp2 and 64 bit Windows Server 2008...see comments to fix it if you tried it on those operating systems

    Ted Krueger (onpnt) Tried on 64bit and it did crash explorer. After reseaching it there isn't a code for it. Just a warning for others that it was tested and doesn't work (Yet!)

    SQLDenis onpnt , you are talking about server 2008 64 bit right? Is this regular or R2 version. 2008 32 bit seems to work

    Ted Krueger (onpnt) Regular server 2008 64. I don't have an R2 to test so not sure. did try win 7 64bit and it worked.

    Ted Krueger (onpnt) If you happen to try this on windows server 2008 64bit (not R2) you'll find it crashes and becomes unrecoverable. it will seem to get stuck in the, "restart explorer". This is due to explorer parsing the folder names on each start up. The only way to recover is go into the OS by UNC so you use an external explorer exe and then delete the folder you just created. Once you delete it, restart explorer on the win 2008 server and it recovers

    only problem I found

    Terry Tompkins word of warning to those with Vista 64bit (sp2): on my machine immediately after creating this folder, windows explorer went into a never-ending crash mode as described by onpnt. I fixed the problem by restarting into safe mode command prompt, and then cd'ing into my user's Desktop folder and doing an "rd /s God[Tab]".

    Ted Krueger (onpnt) Terry, Thank you for posting the fix and the OS you had the problem on. I've received some emails about the problem and have sent them your fix.

    Thanks for contributing to the blog and the site :-)

    Kawazoe Masahiro For me, the real GodMode is the registry editor and has been around since Windows 3.1. It is so GodMode'ish that you can cripple your computer in one click and one key press forcing you to reinstall everything from scratch.

    Well... that and a good kernel debugger of course but this even more powerful GodMode isn't for everyone ;-)

    Ted Krueger (onpnt) For all that may not know how to get into their machine by UNC (Universal Naming Convention) and have tried this on the OS listed that it causes explorer to crash, please follow these steps

    Getting into your machine by UNC basically means you connect to the admin share from another machine. This doesn't mean you need a domain setup internally. If you are using a router at home, then you can do the same thing

    So if you had a router in your house assigning IPs like 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101 etc...

    You would connect to the C drive (admin share) of the computer that is having the problems (say it is the 101 machine) by doing this in the start--> run

    \\192.168.1.101\c$

    you would be prompted for the local admin credentials. More than likely you can enter what you use to log into the machine to get in. Once you do that you go to

    \\192.168.1.101\c$\Users\[your account]\Desktop

    then delete the folder.

    once you do that, go back to the machine and hit the restart explorer message. If that doesn't work refer to Terry's comment above.

    Gon I also had the same problem thatonpnt or Terry Tompkins and I had to solve it by using a KDE live cd... I don't know why but my safe mode dindn't work properly...

    For those who have the same problem as me and (luckyly) have a Linux Live Cd able, I'm gonna tell how to fix the error:
    In my case, as soon as the disc booted I Dolphin, got in folder OS, and from there I got to the windows partition. Then just look for the folder "Desktop" and there you can erase the folder that is giving you problems.

    Sorry for my english... I come from Spain :-p

    I can swear i don't have any idea on informatics, but I've been a linux user for some years. I don't know if this will be very basic or elemental, but if it can help another person it's worth.

    Dave Bunch To enable 'God Mode' on Windows Server 2008X64, create a new desktop shortcut and under 'Type the location of the item' copy and paste:

    C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

    Then click 'Next' and name the shortcut 'God Mode' or whatever you want. The shortcut's icon defaults to C:\Windows\explorer.exe so you'll have to manually change it to C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll(27).

    How to remove shortcut arrows from Windows 2008 icons:

    1. Download: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/4285d1233946106-shortcut-arrow-remove-restore-remove_restore_shortcut_arrow.zip

    2. Extract the following files to a temporary directory:

    64-bit_Remove_Shortcut_Arrow.reg
    Blank.ico
    Restore_Shortcut_Arrow.reg

    3. Copy the file Blank.ico to: C:\Windows\Blank.ico

    3. Right click on the file 64-bit_Remove_Shortcut_Arrow.reg and select Merge from the pop-up menu.

    4. A Registry Editor warning will pop-up, select 'Yes' to accept the merge. Select 'OK' in the confirmation message that follows.

    5. Log off and log on and the arrows will disappear.

    Cheers

    P.S. The contents of file - 64-bit_Remove_Shortcut_Arrow.reg:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
    "29"="C:\\Windows\\Blank.ico,0"
